Installing CO2 Tank for Phantom Hazer

Updated on

The Phantom Hazer that we now use at Life.Church requires CO2 in order to function. There should be 2 CO2 tanks at the campus. One primary tank, and one backup tank. We suggest re-ordering CO2 immediately after the primary tank is used, so that there is always a backup tank on site.

For instructions on ordering CO2, please refer to the article: Getting CO2 Refilled for the Phantom Hazer

After ordering CO2, the old tank needs to be taken off, and the new one properly installed when it arrives. This article will go over how to properly uninstall the old CO2 tank and install the tank.

In order for Airgas to leave the new, filled CO2 tank, they MUST be able to get to the near empty tank easily. If they cannot take the near empty tank, they will not leave the new, filled CO2 tank.

Uninstalling near empty CO2 tank

Close off CO2 tank

Turn the big knob on the top of the tank clockwise, until it is tight. MOST tanks are labeled will a CLOSE rotation arrow and an OPEN rotation arrow.

Unscrew Regulator from tank

Using the wrench provided in your roadcase, or a crescent wrench, slowly loosen the golden connection that secures the regulator to the CO2 tank. Once loose, use your hand to fully unscrew the connection.

DO NOT LOSE THE PLASTIC WASHER ON THE INSIDE OF THIS ASSEMBLY. Absence of this washer can cause leaks of CO2, which can leave you without haze on any given weekend without notice.

Unstrap CO2 tank from stage leg

The CO2 tank should be secured to a stage leg, or sturdy structure with a ratchet strap. Loosen the strap so the tank can be brought to the mail room in the office.

Bring near empty tank to the mail room to be picked up during the swap

Installing new CO2 tank

Secure tank to stage leg, or structural beam

Use the same location the near empty tank came off of. Use the ratchet strap to secure the tank, with the output nozzle facing away from the stage leg or beam.

If the tank was not secured already, please refer to the article CO2 tank safety strap for suggestions on how to secure the tank.

Attach regulator to CO2 tank

Make sure that the plastic washer is inside the nut assembly, in between the regulator and the CO2 tank.

Hand tighten the regulator nut onto the CO2 tank nozzle.

Using the wrench provided in the roadcase, or a crescent wrench, screw the regulator onto the CO2 tank

Double check regulator connection to hazer

The black quick connect hose on the regulator should be connected to the back of the hazer.

If it is not connected, just push it onto the nozzle, as explained by the video below.

Open CO2 tank and check regulator pressure

Turn the big black knob on the top of the CO2 tank counter clockwise to open the CO2 tank output valve. Using the picture below as a reference, watch the regulator's OUTPUT gauge. It should read 4-4.5 BAR without haze pushing out, and 3.5-4 BAR with haze pushing out.

If the regulator reads lower that this, turn the black knob on the regulator counter clockwise to open the output valve until the output gauge reads correctly.

If the regulator reads higher than this, run some haze, and turn the black knob on the regulator clockwise to close the output valve until the output gauge reads correctly.

You must run haze while closing the regulator's output valve to ensure an accurate reading. This releases the pressure in the hose, allowing us to see the output pressure go down accordingly.
